Do we need sports at our little school in the hills of Belmont?
It seems that teachers are not happy with the athletic program, and I can definitely tell that my teachers are not happy with the number of classes that I have missed over the course of the year.
But I think that there is a problem with this situation. The fact of the matter is we do not go to a big name school and one of the few things that are extremely appealing about our small school is the fact we have a decent athletic program.
Our athletic program accounts for 181 students at our school. You think our classes are small now, imagine if we eliminated the athletes from all our classes, think of how small the classes would be, along with how many classes would probably be canceled.
Also, I can't believe how teachers are complaining about student athletes not attending class. My personal experience has led me to believe that athletes go to class as often, if not more, than other students when they are not away on an athletic event.
Our school needs to realize that athletics is probably the only way to create some sort of school pride. I understand we have a good scholastic program, along with a drama and art program. But in reality you don't go to an art show or play and cheer NDNU!
I may be biased because I am an athlete, but I know that a lot of the reasons people come to the school is to play a sport. I know I did. And I can't account for every other athlete, but I think it would be safe to say they would not be here without the chance to play their particular sport.
Nonetheless, I hope that teachers, students, athletes and coaches can become more understanding about athletics. I think there has to be a balance between the school and sports.
Athletes should be held accountable for their school work but teachers need to know that athletes are not always going to be able to be in class.
Yes, classes should be a priority, but I do not think it is a crazy thought to be able to miss classes for sporting events and be able to turn work as soon as possible when class is missed.
Hopefully this conflict can be resolved before something drastic happens.
