Nine seniors played their last home games on April 19 for NDNU's softball team.
The Argos played Grand Canyon April 18 and 19. On Day 1, the Argos split, losing the first and winning the second 6-5. Day 2, was an emotional day for the team's seniors who were unable to come out on top in their last home game. They lost the first, but battled in the second losing 9-7.
"We had great support from our friends and family, so it was tough to lose those last two games," senior Tanya Huson said. "We played hard and battled all the way through; we just couldn't come up with a win."
In the first game, senior Danielle Holt played big with two hits, a home run, three RBIs and a stolen base. In the second game, senior Bryanne Norris hit a solo homerun early and a double later. Then senior Bria DeLorenzo did some home-run damage as she hit two over the fence and finished with three hits and four RBIs.
"It would have been great to get a couple of wins on Senior Day," DeLorenzo said. "But we put up a good fight and pushed across some runs. Grand Canyon just has a great hitting team."
On April 14, the Argos had a non-conference doubleheader against Sonoma State. The Argos were up early in the first game until the seventh inning. They lost 7-3 on a grand slam by the Seawolves. The second game was the opposite. The Argos were down early 0-3, but rallied on two-run homers by seniors Tara Van Meter and Cassie Moser to give them the victory 7-3.
The Argos went to Dixie State in Utah for a conference match up. They played back to back double headers but were unable to come out on top on either day.
Against non-conference Dominican, the Argos handled the Penguins, winning 8-0 and 10-0. The first game was exciting as the Lady Argos hit multiple homeruns in a row. They had two runs in the second and third innings, but it was the fourth that put the game away.
With the bases loaded, Lindsday Crist hit a blast over the fence for a grand slam. Then Van Meter and DeLorenzo hit back-to-back home runs. Dominican had no chance in the fifth when the game ended on the eight-run rule. Pitcher Van Meter was tremendous with three of her own hits and a shutout in five innings.
The Argos' bats stayed hot in the second game. DeLorenzo drove in the first two runs with a bases-loaded single. Then Crist drove in two with a triple. Freshmen Danielle Gray and Tara-lyn Odo each collected RBIs, and Huson hit a double to score two more. Moser finished it off with a double scoring two more in the fourth. Laurel Carstensen picked up the win allowing two hits.
"The wins against Dominican were huge for us," DeLorenzo said. "Not only was it excellent to put them away like we did, but it gave us some momentum going into our last conference games."
The team said goodbye to seniors Huson, DeLorenzo, Holt, Cierra Keeney, Norris, Carstensen, Moser, Van Meter and Milana Jordan. The Argos finish up their season with non-conference games against Humboldt, Dominican and CSU Monterey Bay.
