In the Women's Volleyball sole exhibition game of the spring season, the Lady Argos dueled with California State Monterey Bay, coming out victorious three games to two.
The game teetered back and forth with neither team ever pulling away from the competition. The Argos looked to have the advantage closing in on the fourth game, already being up two games to one. But some late mental lapses caused the Argos to lose the fourth game.
In game five, the Lady Argos played with some intensity, being led by sophomore Caitlin Torres, the women's team outplayed Monterey Bay winning a tight battle 15-13.
The Argos played well most of the match, even though they seemed to be undersized. Monterey Bay tended to have taller players than the somewhat short NDNU team. But height only goes so far, as the women out hearted and showed more talent than the team from Monterey.
This was a promising game for the Lady Argos. Coming into this game, the Argos have been trying to figure out a way to play while missing four graduating seniors, who also were starters. The departure of Marissa Miller, Sarah Perry, Emily Evans and Shasta Millhollin so far has not proven to be too much for the young team to handle.
"We worked really hard this spring and I am glad that it paid off," said sophomore Stephanie Scalise. "We did what we had to do on the court and we were able to outscore them in the last five minutes of the game."
At times, the young team seemed somewhat scattered and appeared at a loss of leadership. But with some team camaraderie, along with some shear determination the young team proved that they could handle pressure in this fierce exhibition game.
