The NDNU Women's tennis team is preparing for their second season, after rebuilding and strengthening their roster. The team was started because NDNU wanted to make the move to NCAA-DII from NAIA. In order for that to happen, the school needed to add another women's sport.
With the addition, NDNU could bring a new look to its sports program. The only problem was that the school did not recruit any tennis players. The head coach of the tennis team, Mike Rudder, who is also an assistant basketball coach for the men's team, decided that he would take players from the other women's teams - women's basketball and volleyball teams and anyone who wanted to try out.
"It is a great experience developing inexperienced players into competitive D-II athletes," says Rudder. "I'm proud of the way that the ladies performed," speaking of last year when they had three basketball and three volleyball players.
Sonya Legaspi, a junior volleyball player, who plays on the tennis team said, "The tennis program is different compared to the volleyball program. Volleyball is an already established program, whereas the tennis program is just getting started."
The tennis team has their first tennis recruit coming in this year, which Coach Rudder feels will be a good start for the future of NDNU tennis.
