Secrets can save lives or tear them apart. Relationships of any nature are complicated. Maintaining a balance of honesty, integrity and respect can fade the lines into a gray area.
However, there comes a time when honesty is the best policy, and it's better to set secrets free. Facing the fear of confession is scary, but doing the right thing overpowers the fear.
Faced with this scenario myself several times, I am providing a how to guide for being honest in any type of relationship.
First,, make sure you are honest with yourself before entering into any situation. Making it clear what you want and who you are will make things easier in the long run. This pertains to friendships, business relations, networking ties, and significant other/love interests.
Make sure you communicate and build a bond with that person before getting serious. Communication is key and often the reason why many relationships fail.
Next, if faced with a confession, make sure you are prepared for the outcome. Certain people will react to confessions differently. For example when confessing an affair or unexpected pregnancy, the reaction will not be desirable.
A very important tip: Do not ignore the person who is making the confession. Being placed in humiliating situations and having to be honest about them is never easy for anyone to do. Respect the confessor and understand that it is one of the most difficult things to do. Pretending he/she doesn't exist will help no one and take an emotional toll on both parties involved.
When making a confession, be sure to drop all expectations of how the other party will react. Having lofty expectations can set you up for disappointment. Make a confession for yourself rather than to get a certain reaction. Closure is often times necessary, but do not depend on the other party. Do it for you!
I understand there are sticky and frankly unwanted situations, but knowing how to deal with them when it comes is essential.
With Valentine's Day quickly approaching and before you hand out the hearts and chocolates, make sure all your relationships are in tip-top shape and ready for the Hallmark holiday.
Handling relationships like a man or woman will show sophistication and maturity. Remember it takes two to tango in universal relationship scenarios.
Don't blame the other party solely for the outcome. Remember my motto, always be safe and make sure to have fun!
