The men's basketball team is off to a strong start and is making a good base for the season. There record is 2-2 after the first two tournaments of the year.
With the exception of one game, the team has seen a lot of strong play and promise going into the heart of the season.
"We lost to CSU Monterey, that is a team we should have beat," said Coach George Puou. "They just out-hustled us, but besides that one game we were progressing well."
The Argos in their home tournament split two games, beating San Francisco State and losing to CSU Monterey Bay.
Monterey, being their most recent opponent, was a game the Argos let slip away. After taking an early 5-2 lead, NDNU would never lead again as the Otters built their cushion to 11 in the second half.
The Argos would cut the lead to three with 6:39 left after back-to-back threes by Ryan Cooper and Dan Bergeron.
However, CSUMB would not let it get any closer, scoring the next four points.
Against San Francisco State the Argos won a close game 61-60. The Argos struggled from the field in the second half, but made clutch free throws down the stretch to preserve the victory.
Dustin Graul scored a team high 12 points for NDNU, going 4-4 from the field and 4-4 from the line. Aaron Parker made 8-9 free throws and finished with 10 points.
Cooper was named to the All-Tournament Team for NDNU after averaging 16.5 points and 4.5 assists in two games.
The Argos first two games of the year were split, both against close competition. The Argos won their opening game against Central Washington 85-84 in overtime. The Argos prevailed on a Bergeron free throw with two seconds left.
Against Northwest Nazarene the Argos lost by four, 69-65. The final score was closer than the game actually was.
It was not till the last few minutes of the game when the Argos made a late charge, did they feel like they had a chance. The team never gave up and battled back and just fell short.
The Argos next games are in Sonoma on Dec. 7 and Dec. 8. Their next home game is not until Dec. 15 when the team expects to maintain their strong play at home, and beat CSU Stanislaus.
