A week in Hawaii...not a bad way to end the year. However, playing four games in seven days is challenging in any situation. Not to mention, the distractions of Hawaii escalating the circumstances.

Regardless, the NDNU women's soccer team completed the 2007 season with a great trip. Coach Lance Thompson said, "The Hawaii trip was very demanding. The facilities are hard to play on, and the officials aren't always certified. Some are used to the high school level, or even lower. So that's tough. But, it was a good way to wrap up the season. We went 3-1."

The Lady Argos shut out three teams in a row; they surpassed Hawaii-Pacific 3-0, University of Hawaii-Hilo 1-0, and Chaminade 2-0. Senior goalkeeper Allie Howarth recorded her fourth shutout of the season, making 16 cumulative saves.

Although they were outscored by BYU Hawaii 4-1 on the last day, Senior Lesley Welch still felt the trip worthwhile.

She shared, "It was very long. My least favorite part was the time change and the constant traveling, but it was fun just playing soccer and relaxing on the beach with friends."

Welch is one of eight seniors who played an important role this year. Thompson accredited all of them with setting a fine example and tone for the rest of this team's young group.

"The senior leaders established and carried on the standard and tradition of Notre Dame Women's Soccer. They were all outstanding, we were very pleased."

Welch has mixed feelings about the conclusion of the season. She said, "It feels great to be done. Of course I'm going to miss it, but I'm ready to move on. One chapter of my life is closing, but another is opening, as well. I'll miss the girls and the atmosphere we created."

One of the random moments she will always remember is from her very first freshman game at NDNU. "Our field was still grass then and I tripped and fell right in front of our bench. They teased me saying 'Watch out for the sniper!' That is one of my funniest memories."

Recruitment for the women's team will be very heavy in the upcoming months. With 17 returners, Thompson acknowledged that he and his staff have their hands full; they are looking to bring in 17 new faces next season. Although they have a lot of work to do, they are looking forward to the future.

Sophomore Catherine Ponce led the Argos with six goals, and senior captain Erin Morrison led with eight assists this season.

The team finished with an overall record of 7-12-1, placing themselves fourth in the Pacific West Conference with a record of 6-6.
