Pack your picnic baskets and put down the clicker for the football game because Thanksgiving is in the park this year.

Students have been invited to join the sociology and psychology department in celebrating Thanksgiving San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. Students, staff, family and friends are all invited to spread the Thanksgiving cheer - and share the food.

Volunteers and able sandwich-makers are called to the on-campus cafeteria to help make sandwiches and pack food for the citizens of Golden Gate Park on Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 20 and 21. Get the bread ready and the bags packed, because from 8-10 p.m. on both evenings NDNU students and staff are making sandwiches.

"This is our 14th year and every year the number of NDNU community participants gets larger as does the homeless population," said NDNU's Professor of Sociology Dr. Cheryl Joseph.

She said friends, family, and pets are all welcome.

The event not only provides food for hungry citizens, but also offers medical care, food, and pet supplies for the homeless wondering pets in the area. Volunteers are wanted and much appreciated.

The event is funded by local businesses and donations. The idea of the event is for students and volunteers to sit with the homeless on a one-on-one basis and make the statistics into a reality.

Joseph said getting to know the people in the park is important for participants to understand what life is like for those who consider Golden Gate Park their home. Using the event as a learning opportunity and giving back to the community is what the psychology and sociology departments look for in this event.

"It's a great experience where you meet a lot of people that you don't think you would meet like teen-agers, children, and tons of animals," said last year participant and NDNU student, Justina Maka.

"It's an experience that I feel everyone should have," said another another, Emmy Gandeza.

Donations for food and money are being accepted, especially turkeys. Bins are located in front of St. Mary's, Ralston Hall, residence halls, the chapel and the library.
