The holiday season is once again upon us, bringing great cheer as well as a long shopping list.

As college students, getting the best deals on gifts for family and friends is a high priority. The first official holiday shopping day is the day after Thanksgiving. It has come to be known as "Black Friday."

The name Black Friday comes from an accounting term because red ink usually indicates a negative profit margin where "in the black" indicates a positive profit margin. Black Friday has the reputation of being the busiest shopping day of the year.

Black Friday is also a very important day for consumers because retailers often give incredible sales on hot items for the season. Hundreds of items go on sale.

So how do you make sure you will get the best deal?

First of all, the best deals are either early in the morning, or late at night. This means you have to wake up from your food coma and get shopping, and be prepared to shop till you drop.

Checking the local newspaper ads for times and deals is the best way to make sure you are at the right place at the right time. Research is key when trying to get the best deals on black Friday.

Make sure you know when, what, where, and how much of a product the retailer has before racing to that store. Sometimes there are only five to 10 items offered at a certain price at one store, but another store might have 20 or 30 of those items at a little less of a discount.

Make sure you are able to actually get the item. Sometimes it is better to go for less of a discount to ensure you will get the item.

Always bring ads with you, and know the policies of the stores you are buying from. You will need to know whether or not you can return something before you buy it.

It is also a must to get gift receipts for every gift you buy. Gift receipts are a common holiday courtesy because you never know if Uncle Larry already has a new coffee maker.

Checking with friends and relatives to see what they are buying for mutual friends and relatives is also a great way to avoid giving the same gift as someone else.

If you do not feel up to fighting the huge crowds on Black Friday, but still want to get some great deals; the internet is a great source. Web sites like , eBay, and Amazon.com are all great online shopping sites.

And don't miss such web sites devoted to Black Friday shopping such as www.bfads.com>.

Most retailers also have web sites where you can order the same items offered in stores. It can be beneficial to buy online on Black Friday because there are usually more items in stock online than in stores.

Of course, if you are feeling ambitious this holiday season, you can always shop online and in stores, and enjoy all the benefits and discounts Black Friday has to offer.

Now that you have a game plan for Black Friday, suit up and get out there. You never know, you just might score some big deals.
