New furry friends have made their way into the NDNU community, and it isn't the deer. A few cats and dogs are running around campus and finding a home with some of the resident staff.

Othello, Jett, and Tucker are new additions to the NDNU campus community. I am sure many of you have seen them around.

However, these new friends are causing controversy among residents. Questions regarding students owning pets and keeping them on campus stir through the resident halls. So why no pets for students?

In an interview with the Director of Student Housing, Mary Oleksy, questions and concerns were addressed regarding the issue of pets on campus.

"The pet policy for staff is separate from the pet policy for students," said Oleksy.

Resident staff positions like resident director and housing director require full time residence on-campus as job requirements, she said. A new policy implemented for the 2007/2008 year makes it possible for staff to have pets on campus. The policy was adjusted to allow the pets, but continues to restrict resident advisers and students to have pets on campus.

"The policy was designed to make it more livable and like a home for full-time staff…This is our only home all year 'round… The pets provide that home element for full time live on staff. Not only do the pets make it more 'homey,' but serve as alternative means of compensation for on-campus staff," said Oleksy.

Because of limited funds, NDNU offers its on-campus staff contractual benefits other than money. Pets, she said, are a way to compete in the job market for positions like resident director and staff.

Jackie Little conducted research to help the university remain competitive in job market. Pet privileges were added as a competitive advantage for the university in recruiting and keeping resident staff.

But students who live here nine months out of the year are still not allowed to have pets. Why?
