When NDNU joined Division II, a sport had to be added to the Notre Dame de Namur family of sports and women's tennis was chosen.
Tryouts began on March 12 at the tennis courts at the entrance of the school.
The coach of the tennis team will be one of the assistant coaches for the men's basketball team, Coach Michael Rudder and his assistant Michael Bolger.
This is Rudder's first year coaching tennis. Bolger has been coaching tennis for five years and is a former player.
The tennis coaches are looking for doubles and singles to compete on this year's team. Six young ladies will be able to travel and compete on the squad. The coaches have already set up some matches against Chaminade University, and Grand Canyon University with more to come.
The tennis team will be competing in the Pac West Conference as all the other sports teams, and traveling to places such as Arizona and Hawaii.
Practices consist of fitness, serving and different techniques taught by Bolger.
Practices will be held here at the school. However, once competitions begin, games will be held at a different location.
The coaches and athletic staff are still trying to figure out where their home court will be.
The facilities at NDNU only have two not-so-great courts, and the regulation for a tennis match is four courts. This means there will be limited space for NDNU tennis players to practice.
Junior Marissa Miller said "It is going pretty well, the coaches are really helpful and its fun learning something new."
