So why does NDNU have such an early Spring Break?

Students wonder why NDNU's Spring Break comes weeks before most universities.
This scheduling is a mixture of good and bad. While students get time to catch their breath after midterms, most students from different universities are still loaded with schoolwork. As soon as they're through, NDNU is back in session.
Dr. Greg White, associate provost, reported, "Our Spring Break aligns with the break between the two seven-week sessions for evening and graduate students. This allows the whole institution to have a week of down-time."
He explained further that up until 1990 NDNU had a Winter Session that lasted four weeks in January. Students who did not enroll in classes in the term left on Winter Break and did not return until classes started on the last week of January or the first week of February.
He mentioned three main causes of change for the academic calendar.
"Getting out of school at the beginning of May instead of the end of May or beginning of June was seen as a significant competitive advantage for students looking for jobs and internships."
He said the Winter Session created some problems because students were away for too long and were less likely to come back. Also, the development of the Evening Intensive Degree Program eliminated the Winter Session.
Also, starting the spring semester earlier provided time for two seven-week summer sessions instead of just one.
