A new group of discriminatory slurs have surfaced again on campus. In mid-January, Dr. Phil Gasper, chair of philosophy and religious studies, hung flyers advertising an anti-war rally to be held on Jan. 27. Vandals defaced the flyers, writing "Bush Rocks" on one of them while tearing down the remaining flyers. Gasper addressed this issue by posting a note asking the perpetrators to respect his first amendment right. Someone then wrote "Fool!" on his note. The same week, vandals, scrawled the above sign on the walkway leading to the cafeteria. According to Raymond Jones, vice-president of Campus Life, issues like these are daily occurrences on every college campus. "What happens here is no different than what happens in the real world," said Jones. "There are going to be people who are intolerant." Since last year, Campus Life has been conducting a Speak Up campaign, which asks students to make a stand against bigotry. Students are encouraged to speak up against bigotry, questions and identify bias when they see it, and to help others work against bigotry. "I am not absolving one group from these issues. Every group has issues of intolerance," said Jones. "We all have to work at understanding these issues and eradicating these issues."
