Nine NDNU theatre students and three faculty and staff members traveled to Cedar City, Utah, Feb. 12 for the annual Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival hosted by Southern Utah University for region VIII.
As a member of the festival, the school can choose to have their plays adjudicated by a faculty member from another school who is part of the festival. The adjudicator then chooses two cast members from the production that they felt were exemplary and nominates them to compete for their region at the festival.
Adjudicators also nominate stage managers, directors, costumers and designers who are students to compete at the festival. Four students from the NDNU theatre were nominated, Julia Hosak and Michael Reed for "Fiddler on the Roof" and Amanda Dreschler and Brady Boyd for "Much Ado About Nothing."
Each nominee brought a partner and prepared two scenes and a monologue to compete with. A scene from "Fiddler on the Roof" was also invited to be shown at the festival, along with scenes and plays from other schools.
At the festival, students compete in rounds and are judged by seven theatre educators from other schools. In the first round, the nominees perform one scene with their partner, the next round two scenes and the third, two scenes and a monologue.
Though NDNU's nominees were well-prepared, the competition was intense and tough and they did not make it to the semi-finals.
When the nominees and other students are not in competition, they attend workshops and plays. Some workshops from this festival centered around Shakespeare, stage combat, working in theatre after graduation, tips to competing in the festival, lighting design, scenic design as well as others.
Students can also participate in the Next Step auditions which help graduating seniors audition for theatre companies who are looking for actors.
Nine students and three faculty and staff members from NDNU attended KCACTF this year to compete and to learn new theatre techniques, and to convene with students and staff who focus on the same goals and passions.
They included Dreschler and partner Adam Ellison, Reed and partner Jessica Rine, Julia Hosak and partner Laurie Nelleson, Boyd and partner Laura Hill, Katerina Schmidt, Mary Hill, R "Dutch" Fritz and Tom Earlywine.
