The NDNU Musical Theatre Department will be showcasing Stephen Sondheim's musical A Little Night Music in the upcoming weeks.
To give prospective audience members a quick glimpse of the play, Mike Elkins and Debra Lambert, chairs of the theater and music departments respectively, got together and decided to dedicate one Noon Concert to previewing selections from the musical.
Lambert plays Madame Armfeldt. She opened the concert with her song "Liaisons." In the song she tells of her adventures and successes as a youth. Only a portion of the song, however, was performed as they did not want to reveal too much of the story's plot.
Next up on the program was the song "Everyday a Little Death," as performed by Courtney Stokes and Elana Ron.
Stokes plays Anne, the young wife of Fredrik Egerman; Ron plays one of the servants, but it is Charlotte, whom she understudies.
The song illustrates Charlotte telling Anne that she thinks that her husband may be having an affair with the same woman her husband is having an affair with. The two worry about the marriages and plot to do something about it.
"Send in the Clowns," a song performed by many notable artists including Barbra Streisand, was the next song performed.
Kelly Hammond, the understudy for Desiree Armfeldt, daughter of Madame Armfeldt, sang the melodic tune which captures Desiree's agony as she yearns to be with a man who does not want feel the same about her. The emotion-ridden ballad is probably Sondheim's most noted song.
The last song on the program for the concert was "The Miller's Son," performed by Shannon Kilpatrick. The freshman plays Petra, a servant at the Egerman estate. She dreams of marrying to raise her status and tells of marrying the miller's son or the business man.
Noon concerts are being held every Friday in Herzo Recital Hall.
