For many years now, I have been sharing my craving for salsa dancing with my circle of friends. After dozens of false starts, I finally mustered up some friends for a night out on the town.
Sophistication doesn't come lightly at Cafe Cocomo Salsa Club; a dress code is required to get in, so no jeans allowed. After we put on some of our elegant threads, we headed north for some serious dancing.
Now I've only taken one salsa lesson in my entire life of 22 years, and I must say I was a bit nervous to go out to an actual salsa club where people do this every night. Needless to say, that once the night began, all nervousness was gone, and excitement filled my blood.
Entering the club, we could hear the music which puts a salsa fire under your feet. You could almost dance in the street.
The club is tucked away on the outskirts of San Francisco, which provided the excitement that it was one of those underground clubs where only the excellent get in.
Inside the club was a live band playing traditional salsa music which meant no English. I would have been content with just sitting and listening to the band, they were so good. For each little song, they had a different dance!
Four men led the band by standing center stage with microphones. Behind them was their musical entourage with many different types of instruments. The music was fantastic but, oh man, was it fast!
As we made our way zig-zagging through a slough of dancers to that one spot you pick out in your head, we began to dance. Of course, the only steps I can remember are one-two-cha-cha-cha! But in all honesty that is all you need.
Four hours later, all of our cha-cha-cha's were tuckered out and our kicks needed a break. The key to successful dancing is to find yourself a partner who knows how to salsa. And let me just say that it is okay for you not to know how because as long as you're having fun, who cares what you look like doing it! Right?
It costs $15 to get into Café Cocomo, but it's so worth it, my friends. It is a 21-and-over club, and the drinks were very cheap. For more information, on Café Cocomo go online at.
The night was fabulous and I don't think that I filled my craving. The night left me satisfied but still wanting more. I'd go again in a heart beat!
