The NDNU Rotaract Club hosted the Walking for Ben Light the Night walk Saturday, Oct. 14, at Burgess Park.
Walking for Ben was one part of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's nationwide walk to raise awareness and funds to cure leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.
This walk has become very successful in San Mateo County because of local businessman Jim McGovern and his wife Claire. The McGoverns lost their infant grandson Ben in 1998 to this disease and started a walk to help raise money to find a cure.
Rotaract Vice President Ruben Mora said, "It is a great project and I am very happy to be a part of it. It was a good turnout and we made our goal of $500 for the club, but next year we hope to fundraise $1,000 for the cause."
Lymphomas are the most common blood cancers, and the myeloma survival rate is only 32 percent, according to the society website. Every five minutes someone in this country is diagnosed with blood cancer, and every 10 minutes someone loses the fight.
Anyone who lives in the area and wants to get more information or is interested in participating in upcoming walks can go to the website.
