The men's soccer team has had a little bit of everything so far. They have had to deal with the frustration of not having a home turf. They have played "home" games at Menlo College, De Anza College, and West Valley College. Through this, the Argos have compiled a 4-3-2 record with all the excitement of an entire season.
The men battled their way to a 4-4 tie against CSU LA, but this would not be their highest scoring game. They lost heartbreakers to Concordia University and San Jose State, losing both games 2-1. They played Fresno Pacific to a 1-1 tie and handled Westmont College 2-1 on a pair of second half goals.
The men left for Washington ready to do some damage and prove their NCAA status. They did just this with an impressive performance against Western Washington University on Sept. 23, defeating them easily 7-2. They came back to play a heartbreaker against Seattle Pacific, losing on a penalty shot in double overtime.
The seniors have proven to be strong leaders, with seniors Erik Michon and Anthony Putrus leading the team with six and five goals respectively. Seniors Anton Del Rosario and Nick Hooper have played well, Del Rosario with four goals and five assists and Hooper with three goals and four assists. Goalie David Montgomery has garnered three wins with only one loss.
Women's Soccer
The women's team has played hard through an early dry spell to win two of their last three games. The women have posted a 3-6 record thus far, playing their home games at other school's fields while NDNU's field goes through a makeover. Coach Joe Silviera stressed early in the season that a major challenge for the team this year would be to combine the new talent with the old and find that chemistry. The Argos have started to come together and are playing with confidence.
The Argo offense came alive with a striking 5-1 victory over Fresno Pacific on Sept. 12. The women benefitted from two goals from Amy Armijo and one each from Ashlee Hinojosa, Lesley Welch, and Sydney Turrubiartes. The women played San Jose State tough, falling 3-1. They came back to notch their first shutout of the year against Westmont College, 3-0. The women have had 10 days off and are ready to continue where they left off.
The Argos are led by freshman Armijo with a team-leading five goals on the year. Junior Julie Loucks has contributed two goals this year. Yang Zhou and senior Kaia Wakamiya lead the team with three and two assists, respectively.
Volleyball
The women's volleyball team has played their competition tough, posting a 7-12 record through September. The Argos have kept themselves busy, traveling to Alaska, Arizona, and Hawaii in one month.
The women performed well in Alaska, finishing 3-1 in the University of Alaska tournament to take third place. The team returned home to play an exciting match against CSU Stanislaus, winning in four games. Juniors Emily Evans and Marissa Miller led all players with 14 kills each. The Argos traveled to Arizona to play Grand Canyon hard, but came up empty, losing both matches.
The women had perhaps their most competitive and hard-fought match of the year on Sept. 15 against rival CSU East Bay. The women seemed to be handling the visiting Pioneers easily, winning the first two game. However, East Bay fought back to push the match to five . The Argos came together to win a nail-biter in five games.
