This year NDNU Theater Department has chosen "Fiddler on the Roof" as its spring musical.

Auditions for the show were on Saturday, Jan. 14, and a good majority showed up to show off their talents.

"Fiddler on the Roof" is about a poor dairyman, who lives in a little village of Anatevka in Tsarist Russia and tries to inspire traditional Jewish values and customs on his five daughters in an atmosphere of hate and anti-Semitism.

Its universal theme of tradition touches on race, class, nationality and religion with laughter, joy and sadness.

"Sunrise, Sunset" and "Tradition" are two of the most famous songs from the musical which was written by Joseph Stein (book), Sheldon Harnick (lyrics) and Jerry Bock (music).

The musical is based on Sholom Aleichem's stories.

The final cast list was posted on Tuesday. Michael Elkins, chair of the theatre department, will direct the show with Debra Lambert as the director of music; Coleen Lorenz, choreographer; Kate Mills, costumes, Dutch Fritz, set design; Alexandria Knight, stage manager; and Marianna Davis, assistant stage manager.

Some of the schools musical theater majors will take on major roles. Julia Louise Hosack will play Golde, Amanda Dreschler, Tzeitel; Laurie Nelleson, Hodel; Marisol Urbano, Yente; Laura Hill, Chava; and Isha Leon, Grandma Tzietel.

The show will be presented on March 24, 25, 30 and April 1 at 7:30 p.m., March 26, April 2 at 2 p.m.
