The NDNU library is filled with many great resources for students' advantage, but early this month, someone took advantage of the library itself and stole three laptop computers in broad daylight.
On Feb. 6, Mary Guedon, a reference librarian, remembers seeing the three laptops after making her rounds in the library about 2 p.m..
According to Dave Mefford, Guedon noticed that they were gone when she closed the library at 11 p.m., but she originally thought that OIT (Office of Information Technology) had taken them for servicing.
Dr. Klaus Musmann, the director of library services, found that they were still missing the following morning and it was clear that they had been taken.
Musmann said, "The cables to these laptops had been severed."
Musmann said that "these three laptops were equipped with special software" to be used as a resource for the benefit and success of students.
Mefford speculated, "There were at least two people involved in the incident; two computers could be easily slipped into a backpack (but not three)."
He added that a report was filed with the Belmont Police.
Mefford said that the serial numbers had been given to the Belmont Police and that "they are being checked through a special site on eBay to see if someone is trying to sell them."
Mefford also added that the remaining laptops in the library have been removed as a precaution, so there currently are no laptops in the library at all.
According to Mefford, the Belmont Police would be able to use the laptops' serial numbers to identify them if they were to turn up.
Courtney Andrews, a student at NDNU said, "I find it disheartening that students on our campus just simply can't be trusted. I feel like our campus is a community where people really get to know each other because our school is so small.
"I definitely don't feel as comfortable knowing there are people here who are capable of such an act, especially when it happens in broad daylight."
If anyone has any information or remembers anything pertinent to this event, he or she should contact Mefford in Public Safety at ext. 3502 or the Belmont Police Department at 595-7400.
