Although Whitfield made a last-minute cancellation due to illness, NDNU students held an impromptu miniature concert.
Whitfield recently joined the NDNU staff and teaches song styling and song interpretation to musical theater and classical singers. She is also assisted by her husband.
"Our singers, classical and musical theater alike, are learning to communicate to their audiences through their music, not to just make pretty sounds," said Debra Lambert, Vocal Director.
"The students always make a huge leap forward in their communicative skills after they have worked with Wesla and Michael." .
Without the presence of Whitfield or Greensill, NDNU performers sang different music genres from Billy Holiday to the hit Broadway show "Cabaret."
Francesca Camus kicked off the night by singing a beautiful classical melody. Some of the singers included Efrain Ibarra, Justin Basil and Heidi Olson.
Olson sang a Spanish piece about a woman's desperate plea for her husband, who is about to leave her.
The next song was a jazzy rendition of Billy Holiday's "Good Morning, Heartache" and "Summertime" sung by Adia Griffith. Her beautiful melody and voice captivated the audience's heart.
Justin Nixon, the pianist for the evening, sang a classical piece, which left some of the audience members in tears. The final performance was by Marisol Urbano who sang "This Time" from the Broadway show "Cabaret."
Whitfield's performers magnificently delivered a great show.
Whitfield's performance will be rescheduled and details will be announced in the spring.
Regular admission will be $20 and $10 for seniors and students. For more information call NDNU music department at (650) 508-3429.
