Going 0-14 to start last season, Stephanie Duke, women's basketball head coach, didn't even get their first win until two months into last season.

But this year, she has her Argonauts heading in the right direction after the season home-opener Nov. 15. The Argonauts rinsed the Keelhaulers of Cal St. Maritime, 86-43.

Sophomore Amanda Monteith led all scorers with 17 points in only 19 minutes of action.

The Idaho native shot .800 from the field and added four rebounds along with three steals in a solid evening.

Duke credits a strong preseason schedule, made up of two scrimmages, both won by the Argonauts, in preparing her basketball team.

"We won both scrimmages and winning your home opener makes it sweet."

The Argonauts shot 61 percent form the floor and 57 percent from beyond the three-point arc.

"Once we got the lead, we tried to work our offense. We got to run through our offense," Duke said.

Senior Tamsen Lee had five points and four assists in 17 minutes of action.

Team defense was the order of the night, as the Argos were able to produce 14 steals and every player scored in the game.

"It was really a team effort and feels good to win," said senior Marie Fredlake, who had a pair of points in the win.

Coming off the bench were Helen Suarez, Ashley Wilson and Sarah Miller, who each had 13 points apiece in the win.

"Helen is a really good athlete and . . . she's going to do that for us practically every night," Duke said about the freshmen.

Duke praised Wilson's patience: "She doesn't make too many mistakes. She's a good defender and shooter."

Miller is a "flat-out scorer," and one aspect of her game is that she can catch and shoot the ball, said Duke.

Up next for the Argos is a trip to Southern California this weekend to play Concordia University, on Nov. 18, and La Sierra University, Nov. 20, their first game.

"Concordia is going to be tough because they're big and have some division I transfers. It's going to be a good game," said Duke.
