Dear Students, Faculty
and Staff:
I want to address the recent homophobic incident that occurred on campus. This is not acceptable behavior, and I am pleased that there has been discussion in some classes and in the Residence Halls about the incident.
Posters on campus have called our attention to the need to eliminate homophobia on our campus and in our world in general.
We are, I believe, a campus that understands, appreciates, and celebrates differences. The values of our mission to teach people what they need to know to live in this world, to help all of us work on and towards issues of social justice and to work for world peace are vales that are not reflected in homophobic behavior.
All of us need to stand for the rights of each of our community members and we all need to have the courage to challenge those who threaten the individual rights of any of our community members.
The Notre Dame de Namur University community deserves a far better reflection on our values than this incident provided. We can not, we should not, and we will not tolerate intolerance.
