This past summer, Broadway By the Bay, in conjunction with NDNU, organized a nine-week program of intense training in acting, singing, and dancing, called Summer Musical Theatre Conservatory.
Run by director, Marc Jacobs and assistant director, Debra Lambert the program was held in NDNU's music and theatre departments.
Launched this year, SMTC's curriculum started at American Musical Theater in San Jose as the Theatre Arts Institute. Jacobs and Lambert, took the program and brought it to Broadway By the Bay and NDNU.
Francesca Camus, who attended the program before it came to NDNU, said, "The program not only trained me in singing, acting and dancing, but all the instructors prepared me for the real world. The instructors are all completely honest and know how to bring out the best in each student by preparing us for every possible situation out there."
Students participated with some of the most renowned musical theatre professionals in the Bay Area. This year, three of NDNU's Music and Theater students participated in the program, Efrain Lazcano, Melissa Fischer, and Isha Leon.
"Everyone involved made SMTC an awesome environment where I was not afraid to try new things and really put myself out there. I couldn't have imagined a better way to spend my summer! SMTC was an amazing experience and a once in a lifetime opportunity", claimed Fischer.
All of the instructors in the program have performed with many famous celebrities and have starred in internationally acclaimed productions.
Among these instructors were Marie Stinett, Dottie Lester-White, and Robyn Tribuzi who taught various types of dance including everything from jazz to hoe-downs, swing to hip hop. Lambert and Daniel Hughes served as private vocal instructors to all students. In private lessons, students worked on solo repertoire and vocal technique. Greg Fritsch and Kimberly Mohne-Hill taught acting classes from contemporary scene studies to Shakespeare.
